Students receive full credit from Germaine
Lawrence's on-campus, licensed school. Our program is aligned
with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and approved
by the state Department of Education.
We offer a full range of academic programs, including mathematics,
English, social studies and sciences.
CREATING LIFE LONG LEARNERS
Our specially trained teachers have a long track
record of instilling a love of learning in our students.
They go well beyond the basics to engage students
through innovative teaching techniques that accommodate
special needs, improve academic skills, and engage
students who have not experienced academic success.

GIRLS PUT LEARNING INTO ACTION
Most class periods are from sixty to ninety minutes
long, allowing adequate time for discussion, exploration
and cross subject instruction. Our classrooms are
much more than lectures, papers and textbooks. All
students participate in hands-on, project based
course work. For example, in a unit on the American
civil rights movement, your daughter may help design
and create a model civil rights museum. Through
this hands-on project, she will learn about history
and people in the movement, increase mathematic
skills such as scale, percentages and fractions,
and create a visual display to be shown to parents
and others in the Germaine Lawrence community.
Besides academic skills, students focus on appropriate
classroom behavior, increasing attention and concentration
and preparing to transition to a less structured
classroom setting upon discharge.

EVERY GIRL WILL GET THE INDIVIDUAL
ATTENTION SHE NEEDS
At
Germaine Lawrence, we create an individualized education plan
just for each student. Our teachers modify their curricula
to meet every student’s individual learning needs. Each
classroom has up to ten students with a Teacher and a Teacher's
Assistant in each class, allowing for individual academic
and behavioral needs to be addressed. School Counselors are
available to assist students in need of one-on-one attention
or who may be experiencing emotional or behavioral problems.
In addition, we have volunteer and Title One tutors to work
with any girl who needs extra assistance.

EDUCATION IS AN INTEGRAL PART
OF EACH GIRL’S OVERALL TREATMENT
We know that our students do not leave their problems
at the classroom door. Our teachers work closely
with our professional therapeutic staff and are
aware of the issues each student brings to the classroom.
The teachers meet regularly with the students’
treatment coordinators to talk about her progress,
successes and difficulties to incorporate her education
into her treatment process.

CREATIVE, CARING PROFESSIONAL
STAFF GREET THE GIRLS EVERY DAY
Our biggest strength is our superior staff. Our
teachers are experienced in providing the challenge
and encouragement each girl needs to be an active
member of a learning community. They receive ongoing
training in special learning challenges that focus
on everything from student assessment to clinical
training. A math consultant visits twice a month
to give teaching and lesson modification advice.
Every day, our teachers go above and beyond what is usually
required in a classroom. As one teacher said, “I wear
many hats. I am a teacher, a disciplinarian, a clown, and
an actress, anything it takes to keep my kids engaged and
wanting to learn in class.”

WE WILL EXCITE AND ENGAGE EVERY
ONE OF OUR GIRLS IN LEARNING
We know that our education program needs to be fun
and challenging for our students. Every girl at
Germaine Lawrence takes part in one of our electives:
physical education, art or in our unique culinary
program .
For our college bound students, we offer SAT preparation.
For those in the 8th and 10th grades, we provide
special tutoring to prepare them for the MCAS exam.
Students looking for a leadership experience can
join the student council.
We offer an eight week summer program to take advantage
of special opportunities in July and August.
We also know that learning extends beyond the classroom walls.
Each class spends time every week in our library. Computers
are available in all classrooms, the library, and in each
dorm. In addition, we have a special computer lab staffed
by trained staff
Special events throughout the year help the learning
to go further. Field trips, guest speakers, and
special class projects supplement our ongoing events.

REACHING OUT TO FAMILIES
You will be constantly apprised of your daughter’s
progress. Each student has a quarterly case conference, which
includes a teacher/parent update on educational progress.
Students have an individual education plan meeting attended
by their parent/or guardian. Throughout the school year classroom
teachers hold events, such as our Academic Fair where parents
and guardians are invited to participate.
