Program
Girls at Germaine Lawrence who have an interest
in the culinary arts have the option to pursue this
field as one of their electives. The students who
participate in this program receive an introduction
to culinary arts, with an emphasis on tools of the
trade, sanitation, entrée, sandwich, salad
and dessert preparation. Each student works five
hours per week and assists in the daily production
of all meals for the entire Germaine Lawrence campus.
Head chef, Tom Shea, estimates that this is equal
to approximately 250-260 meals a day. He is extremely
proud of the girls in culinary, who are presented
with very high expectations in the kitchen and continue
to meet these goals. Another aspect of the culinary
arts program is for the girls to assist at Germaine
Lawrence’s special events. Each year, girls
in the culinary program prep and serve for the Annual
Meeting, which is a gathering of the Board of Directors
and the Members of the Corporation. The girls in
the culinary program are an asset to everyone at
Germaine Lawrence, and are learning essential tools
for their future endeavors.

that are required to produce their desired products,
but they also learn the history, science behind
the medium they are working in. Many projects are
multicultural and interdisciplinary themed, allowing
students to express themselves and relate to societal
and social issues with visual language.
Art Auction
Every year students participate in the Art Auction.
The Art Auction allows students the opportunity
to present, and sell their artwork to the invited
public. They proudly display their hard work, earning
75% of their sales and giving 25% back to the art
budget which is spent primarily on new materials
for new units of study.
Physical Education Program
Girls in the physical education program take part
in activities for one hour every school day. On
Mondays and Wednesdays, they can be found in the
fitness room, working out on a variety of cardiovascular
machines, lifting weights, stretching, doing yoga
or pilates. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays,
they head to the gymnasium to play volleyball, floor
hockey, basketball – or even a game of their
own division. They often will end each unit with
a tournament between the classes.
In addition to providing exercise and fun, the physical
education program is designed to teach the skills
of each game, help the students improve their techniques,
develop teamwork, sportsmanship and cooperation.
Staff often come to cheer on the girls. Win or lose,
they always leave having had a good time. After
school, the physical education teacher can be found
leading intramural events and working with any girl
who is interested in refining her skills.
